The UGLE's New Masonic Charity Name?

Postby Mike Martin » Fri Apr 03, 2015 1:19 pm

The Freemasons’ Grand Charity, Masonic Samaritan Fund, Royal Masonic Benevolent Institution and the Royal Masonic Trust for Girls and Boys are proposing to consolidate their activities into a new charity.

We are looking at how we present the new charity and would like your opinion on the name. We have created a range of names and, through research and consultations, narrowed this down to a short list of three that we'd value your views on.

I like the Masonic Foundation one.

But since I'm not a UGLE Mason I don't get a vote.

Freemasonry Cares sounds like a 'mission statement'.

Done...

If The Freemasons Charity gets the vote, you'll have the Grammar Police on the case, over the missing apostrophe!

It does if they are marketing to me!

If they can't get the details right in a name then how can I trust them to do the job properly? Makes me think that they won't oay attention to detail

From Fowler's Modern English Usage (1996 edition): "Since about 1900, many business firms, institutions and journals have abandoned apostrophes in their titles, eg Barclays Bank, Citizens Advice Bureau, Diners Club...Teachers Training College...This trend...seems certain to continue."

It may or may not be strictly correct (there's an argument both ways), but it's accepted usage. See also the Oxford Dictionary of English under "apostrophe".
